unforgiving part of australia's outback. unforgiving part of australia's captioning funded by cbs good morning, everybody, good to be with you. i'm terrell brown. today michigan lawmakers are expected to begin casting the final votes on legislation critics say will be a major blow to organized labor. the right-to-work debate is expected to draw large protests at the state capitol. governor rick snyder in a reversal says he will sign the bill into law as soon as it hits his desk. in michigan yesterday, president obama said the law was politically driven. susan mcginnis is in washington with details. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, the governor now says he wants the economic boost that the law would bring, the jobs and the companies that would locate there, but many disagree. workers say it's going to push down their pay and benefits and weaken unions. police stand shoulder to

shoulder preparing for as many as 10,000 protesters at the michigan state capitol today. >> people have a constitutional right to demonstrate. however, all we ask is that they do it in an orderly, lawful, and civil manner. >> reporter: state legislators vote this morning on a right-to-work bill that would weaken unions. opponents acknowledge they're powerless to stop it. >> at the end of the day they'll be passed and signed by the governor. that doesn't make it right. >> reporter: the bill means michigan workers would no longer have to pay the union fees for negotiating contracts and other services. >> if i'm being provided a service by a particular organization, i don't care if that's a club due or if it's something, then i should be paying for a service that's provided to me. >> reporter: supporters say the law will bring jobs to michigan. >> we need to do what we can to make sure our economy gets rolling full speed again. >> reporter: president obama weighed in on the battle during a visit to an auto supplier in

detroit monday. >> these so-called right-to-work laws, they don't have to do with economics, they have everything to do with politics. [ cheers ] >> what they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money. >> reporter: michigan would become the 24th state to pass right-to-work laws, but only the second rusted belt state. indiana passed its own law earlier this year. >> indiana recently became a right-to-work state and jumped ahead of us again. we're going to do everything we can to keep michigan competitive. >> reporter: economists say right-to-work laws do attract more business, but employees are paid less. there's a lot of disagreement over just how much of an impact right-to-work laws can have on a state's economy. in general, experts say so many factors go into a company's decision to expand or locate in a certain state that it's hard to point to right-to-work laws as an overriding factor. >> susan mcginnis, thank you very much. to the fiscal cliff negotiations now. it is crunch time. with just three weeks before higher taxes and spending cuts kick in, negotiations are

underway, but it's not known what if any progress is being made. speaking in michigan yesterday, the president said he's willing to compromise a little, but the gop wants to know specifics. danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: president obama's campaign to steer clear of the fiscal cliff took him to a diesel engine plant outside detroit. >> congress doesn't act soon, meaning the next few weeks, starting on january 1, everybody's going to see their income taxes go up. >> reporter: private face-to-face talks were revived this weekend when house speaker john boehner went over to the white house. neither side is releasing details about the conversation, but taxes are still the big sticking point. >> i'm not going to have a situation where the wealthiest among us including folks like me get to keep all our tax breaks. >> reporter: republicans have adamantly opposed raising taxes, but now some are considering it

if democrats agree to social security and medicare changes. republicans were disappointed with the proposed spending cuts in the president's first offer which do not include changes to entitlement programs. >> we have got to do something about the spending. an obsession to raise taxes is not going to solve the problem. >> reporter: advocates for seniors wants social security and medicare out of the fiscal cliff debate. >> don't talk about them as if they're entitlement reforms and giveaways. these are programs that people have paid for over their entire working lives and have earned these programs. >> reporter: if lawmakers and the president don't find a compromise, taxes for all american will go up, and across-the-board spending cuts will kick in on january 1. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. secretary of state hillary clinton canceled a trip to north africa in the middle east because of a stomach virus. the focus of the trip is the crisis in syria. and the obama administration has granted one group affiliated with the rebels a terrorist organization that has alleged

ties to al qaeda. any assets in the u.s. are frozen, and americans are barred from doing business with it. the body of the navy s.e.a.l. killed during a mission to rescue an american doctor from the taliban is on its way home. the family of dr. dilip joseph released a statement praising the s.e.a.l.'s hero im. he was part of seal team six, the unit that killed osama bin laden. it remain unclear if he was on that mission. david martin reports. >> reporter: the pentagon identified the navy s.e.a.l. killed as 28-year-old petty officer first class nicolas checque. part of a high-risk operation to rescue american dilip joseph before his taliban captors got him across the border into pakistan where u.s. forces cannot go. joseph, a medical adviser to the private aid organization morningstar development, had been kidnapped on wednesday along with two afghan staff members in the mountains east of kabul. according to u.s. officials, the

taliban demanded a ransom of $100,000, money morningstar development didn't have. the taliban released the two afghans but kept joseph and were heading toward pakistan. the two afghans apparently told the american military joseph was being abused by his captors with slaps to the head. the reported mistreatment and the fact that joseph would soon disappear into pakistan convinced general john allen, the commander in afghanistan, to order the rescue mission. on saturday night, seale -- s.e.a.l. team six conducted the operation 50 miles from the pakistani border. in the resulting fire-fight, checque was killed by a single gunshot to the head. seven of the taliban who were armed with machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and ak-47s were also killed. joseph was rescued unharmed. a total of 65 s.e.a.l.e.s have been killed since 9/11, most of them in afghanistan. checque had been a s.e.a.l. for

ashley morrison with that and more from new york. good morning to you. good morning to you. asian markets were cautious as u.s. leaders agreed to reach a budget deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. tokyo's nikkei gained a fraction while hong kong's hang seng added a quarter percent. this week the federal reserve is expected to announce a new bond-buying program aimed at lowering interest rates. if it works, it might soften the blow if the nation goes over the fiscal cliff. fed chair ben bernanke has said if a budget deal can't be reached, there's little the central bank can do to offset the shock of those spending increases and tax cuts. a strong sales report from mcdonald's offset wall street's worries about the fiscal cliff negotiations. the dow added 15 points while the nasdaq gained 9 points. hsbc is paying a record $1.9 billion to settle a federal and state money laundering probe. the british bank was under investigation for allegedly transferring billions of dollars on behalf of iran which is under international sanctions. hsbc is also alleged to have

laundered money from mexican drug cartels. under the terms of the settlement, the bank will avoid criminal prosecution if it meets certain requirements. one of the more popular parts of president obama's health care law is a provision that stops insurance companies from turning down patients with pre-existing conditions, but it's going to cost the estimated 190 million americans who are already on health plans about $63 per person. the plan is to raise $25 billion over three years. most of it will go to insurance companies to cover unexpected costs incurred by new customers with pre-existing conditions. holiday shopping is leading to more work. a job placement firm says retailers added more than 465,000 seasonal workers last month. that's up 21% from a year ago. and police in australia say apple's map program is potentially life threatening. authorities say several drivers

a new study links childhood obesity to having and watching tv in the bedroom. the biomedical research center looked at 369 kids ages 5 to 18. those who had a set in the bedroom were more likely to watch more tv and also had more fat and a higher weight circumference than those who did not have a tv in the bedroom. researchers also found that kids with a bedroom tv also slept less and lacked regular family meals which can also be related to weight gain. it is the latest

breakthrough in the war on cancer. a little girl from pennsylvania diagnosed with leukemia is living proof of the power of gene therapy. as we report, the experimental treatment worked when traditional chemotherapy failed. >> reporter: emily whitehead was just 5 years old when her mother, carrie, noticed alarming symptoms. carrie researched them on line. >> stumbling, nosebleeds. the first thing that pops up is leukemia. >> reporter: emily had all, acute lymphoplastic leukemia, a disease that s curable in most children who go through chemotherapy. but emily was among the 15% of children for whom chemo didn't work. she thinks her dog, lucy, knew it first when her cancer came back. >> she wouldn't play with me or anything. she would just sit. >> reporter: do you think she knew you were sick? >> yeah. >> reporter: emily's family turned to an experimental therapy at the children's hospital of philadelphia. dr. steven gruff is leading the study.

>> the idea is that we're redirecting the cells of the immune system against the cancer. >> reporter: scientists use the patient's own immune cells called t-cells. white blood cells that help fight infections. they remove the cells, genetically engineer them to attack leukemia cells, and inject them back into the patient. the engineered t-cell in gray attacks the cancer cells, tinted green. >> this is a whole new way of treating cancer. >> reporter: emily received an infusion of her engineered t-cells last april. she suffered life threatening complications. >> they took us in the hall and said, "there is no room to get sicker. she is as sick as you can get." you know, they said, "you should call your family in. there's a good chance she won't be here in the morning." >> reporter: doctors managed the toxic effects. ten days later she showed dramatic improvement. >> we can't find any leukemia in her body using the most sensitive tests that we have. >> i thought, we're witnessing a miracle.
